World’s First Wrist Watch

Before wrist watches, people used pocket watches for timekeeping that can carry with them.

Watches have always been used as a decorative jewellery in addition to their duties.

The First Wristwatch

Patek Philippe made the first wrist watch in 1868. It’s for Countess Koscowicz of Hungary.

Antoni Patek (is founder of Patek Philippe) designed the first wrist watch for Countess Koscowicz. She intended it to be a decorative jewellery. 

At that time, men considered wrists inappropriate for wearing jewelry or watches, or we can say that they were not popular.

The First Wristwatch For Men

The men used to heavy pocket watches and rely them for long time. In past, the pocket watch was a status symbol to distinguish the successful man.

First watches for men by Girard-Perregaux

Mass production of wristwatches is for German Army. They needed timekeeping at warfare zone, and ordered first bracelet/wrist watches for men from several watch manufacturers. In 1880s Girard-Perregaux made first wrist watches for soldiers.
